HOW TO USE

  1. 1

Enter your total retirement savings (nest egg) — the combined balance across all your retirement accounts (401k, IRA, brokerage, etc.) at the time you retire.

  2. 2

Enter your expected annual return in retirement. Many retirees use 4–5% for a conservative balanced portfolio. Enter how many years you expect to be retired (life expectancy minus retirement age).

  3. 3

Add any guaranteed income sources: monthly Social Security benefit and monthly pension (if applicable). These reduce how much you need to withdraw from your portfolio.

  4. 4

The calculator shows your safe monthly portfolio withdrawal, total monthly income, annual income, and how long your savings will last at different withdrawal rates.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Robert retires at 65 with $1,200,000 saved. He expects a 5% return and plans for a 30-year retirement. Safe monthly withdrawal: $1,200,000 × 0.05/12 / (1 − (1.004167)^−360) = $6,441.86. He also receives $2,400/month from Social Security and $600/month from a pension. Total monthly income: $6,441.86 + $2,400 + $600 = $9,441.86 ($113,302/year). The 4% rule would suggest $1,200,000 × 4% / 12 = $4,000/month from his portfolio alone.
