HOW TO USE

  1. 1

Choose your unit system (Metric metres or Imperial feet) and your layout pattern. Selecting Diagonal or Herringbone automatically sets the waste percentage to 15%, since angled cuts generate significantly more offcuts. You can adjust the waste manually afterwards.

  2. 2

Enter your room length and width. For rooms with alcoves or bay windows, measure the full rectangle that contains the room (include the alcoves) — this slightly over-orders but ensures you have enough boards. For L-shaped rooms, split into two rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the box counts.

  3. 3

Enter the coverage per box from the product packaging — it is always printed on the label. Common box sizes range from 1.596 m² to 2.484 m² for metric packaging and 19–25 sq ft for US packaging. Use the preset buttons for the most common sizes. This is the most important number to get right.

  4. 4

Adjust the waste allowance and underlay roll size. Standard underlay rolls are 10–15 m². If you know your price per box, enter it for a total material cost estimate.

  5. 5

Read your results: boxes to buy, total area covered, underlay rolls needed, and material cost. The installation checklist on the right covers the key steps that prevent the most common laminate installation mistakes — including acclimatisation, expansion gaps, and stagger distances.

WORKED EXAMPLE

How many boxes of laminate for a 4m × 5m lounge, straight layout, 10% waste? Step 1: Room area 4m × 5m = 20 m² Step 2: Add 10% waste 20 × 1.10 = 22 m² Step 3: Find boxes (2.105 m²/box — standard 12mm) 22 / 2.105 = 10.45 → order 11 boxes Step 4: Total coverage ordered 11 × 2.105 = 23.155 m² (3.155 m² spare — keep for future repairs) Step 5: Underlay rolls (15 m²/roll) ceil(22 / 15) = 2 rolls Step 6: Cost at $48/box 11 × $48 = $528 for laminate 2 underlay rolls at ~$30 each = $60 Total materials: ~$588 DIAGONAL LAYOUT version (same room): • Waste: 15% → 20 × 1.15 = 23 m² • Boxes: ceil(23 / 2.105) = 11 boxes (same in this case) • But for larger rooms, the 5% extra waste adds up quickly
