The Body Fat Percentage Calculator estimates body fat using two methods: the US Navy circumference method (recommended, accuracy ±3–4%) and the BMI Method (Deurenberg, 1991). The Navy method uses neck and abdomen measurements for men, or neck, waist, and hip measurements for women. Results include body fat percentage w..
📏 How to measure: Use a flexible tape measure. Measure at the point of largest circumference for each body part. Keep tape horizontal and snug (not compressing skin). Measure in the morning before eating.
Measure at navel level. Relax, don't suck in.
Measure just below larynx (Adam's apple). Tilt head slightly forward.

ABOUT US NAVY METHOD
The US Navy circumference method (used by the US Department of Defense) estimates body fat from neck and abdomen (men) or neck, waist, and hip (women) measurements. Accuracy: ±3–4% vs DEXA scan. More accurate than BMI method but less accurate than hydrostatic weighing or DEXA.
Choose your unit system (Metric or Imperial), biological sex, and calculation method. The US Navy method is recommended — it uses body circumference measurements and is more accurate than the BMI method. Choose BMI Method only if you do not have access to a flexible tape measure.
For the US Navy method: enter your height and weight, then measure the required circumferences. For men: abdomen (at navel level, relaxed) and neck (just below the Adam's apple). For women: waist (narrowest point), hip (widest point), and neck. Use a flexible tape measure, keep it horizontal and snug without compressing the skin.
For the BMI method: enter height, weight, and age. The calculator computes your BMI automatically and applies the Deurenberg (1991) formula to estimate body fat. This method is less accurate than the Navy method because BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat — a muscular person may get an overestimated body fat reading.
Read the results: your body fat percentage shown in the colour of your ACE category (Essential Fat → Athletes → Fitness → Average → Obese). Below it you see fat mass and lean mass in kg and lbs. The donut chart shows the fat/lean split visually, and the category bar shows your position across all five ACE categories.
Enter a target body fat percentage to unlock the 'To reach X% body fat' calculation. This uses your current lean mass and calculates exactly how much total weight you need to lose (assuming you preserve lean mass) to hit the target. This is the scientifically correct method — it accounts for the fact that you are trying to lose fat, not muscle.
US Navy body fat calculation for a 175cm male: Inputs (in cm, converted to inches for formula): • Height: 175 cm = 68.90 inches • Abdomen: 82 cm = 32.28 inches • Neck: 38 cm = 14.96 inches Formula: BF% = 86.010 × log₁₀(abdomen_in − neck_in) − 70.041 × log₁₀(height_in) + 36.76 BF% = 86.010 × log₁₀(32.28 − 14.96) − 70.041 × log₁₀(68.90) + 36.76 BF% = 86.010 × log₁₀(17.32) − 70.041 × log₁₀(68.90) + 36.76 BF% = 86.010 × 1.2385 − 70.041 × 1.8382 + 36.76 BF% = 106.53 − 128.73 + 36.76 BF% = 14.6% → Category: Fitness Body composition (80 kg total weight): • Fat mass: 80 × 0.146 = 11.7 kg (25.8 lbs) • Lean mass: 80 × 0.854 = 68.3 kg (150.6 lbs) To reach 12% body fat (preserving lean mass): • Target weight = 68.3 / (1 − 0.12) = 68.3 / 0.88 = 77.6 kg • Fat to lose: 80 − 77.6 = 2.4 kg
FORMULA REFERENCE TABLE
| Name | Formula | Description |
|---|---|---|
| US Navy — Male | BF% = 86.010×log₁₀(abd−neck) − 70.041×log₁₀(height) + 36.76 | All measurements in inches. Abdomen at navel; neck below larynx. Accuracy ±3–4%. |
| US Navy — Female | BF% = 163.205×log₁₀(waist+hip−neck) − 97.684×log₁₀(height) − 78.387 | All measurements in inches. Waist at narrowest point; hip at widest. Accuracy ±3–4%. |
| BMI Method — Male | BF% = 1.20×BMI + 0.23×age − 16.2 | Deurenberg (1991). Does not distinguish muscle from fat. Accuracy ±5–6%. |
| BMI Method — Female | BF% = 1.20×BMI + 0.23×age − 5.4 | Higher constant reflects greater essential fat percentage in females. |
| BMI | BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)² | Required for BMI method. Calculated internally from weight and height. |
| Fat Mass | Fat mass = weight × (BF% / 100) | Total kilograms of body fat. |
| Lean Mass | Lean mass = weight × (1 − BF% / 100) | Everything except fat: muscle, bone, water, organs. |
| Weight at target | W_target = Lean mass / (1 − target_BF% / 100) | How much to weigh to reach a target body fat percentage, assuming lean mass is preserved. |
