CDs are FDIC-insured up to $250,000, making them one of the safest ways to earn a fixed r...

HOW TO USE

  1. 1

Enter your CD deposit amount — most banks require $500–$1,000 minimum, with some requiring $2,500–$10,000 for the best rates.

  2. 2

Enter the APY exactly as advertised by your bank. Unlike savings accounts where rates can change at any time, a CD rate is locked for the full term.

  3. 3

Select your CD term using the preset buttons (3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, or 60 months) or choose Custom to enter any term in months.

  4. 4

Select the compounding frequency. Most CDs compound daily. The difference between daily and monthly compounding is small but the calculator handles both correctly.

  5. 5

Select your early withdrawal penalty type — this is the penalty the bank charges if you withdraw before maturity. Typical penalties: 3 months interest for short-term CDs, 6–12 months for longer terms. No-penalty CDs sacrifice some rate for this flexibility.

  6. 6

Select your income tax rate to see how much of your CD interest will go to taxes. CD interest is taxable as ordinary income each year it accrues, even if you do not withdraw it.

  7. 7

Scroll down to use the CD Ladder Builder — enter your own deposits, rates, and terms to design a personalised ladder strategy.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Example: $10,000 deposit, 5.25% APY, 12-month term, daily compounding, 6-month EWP, 22% tax. Maturity value = $10,000 × (1.0525)^1 = $10,525.00. Total interest = $525.00. Tax at 22% = $115.50. After-tax balance = $10,409.50. Early withdrawal penalty (6 months interest) = $10,000 × 5.25% × 6/12 = $262.50. Net if withdrawn early = $10,525 − $262.50 = $10,262.50. Daily interest = $525 / 365 = $1.44/day. Monthly interest = $525 / 12 = $43.75/month.
