The Roof Shingles Calculator tells you exactly how many bundles of shingles to buy for any roof. Enter your sloped roof area directly in square feet, or use footprint dimensions and pitch to calculate it automatically. Choose from 3-Tab Asphalt, Architectural (Laminate), Architectural Heavy, or Wood Shake — each with c..

KEY FACTS
1 square = 100 sq ft of roof
3-tab: 3 bundles/square, ~80 shingles/sq
Architectural: 3 bundles/sq (some 4)
Ridge cap: 1 bundle per 35 linear ft
Starter strip: 1 bundle per 105 linear ft
Felt underlay: 1 roll per 4 squares
Nails: ~2.3 lbs per square (1.75" coil)
Waste: 10% simple · 15% standard · 20% hip
Choose your input method: 'Enter Roof Area' if you already know your sloped roof area in square feet (use this if you have a contractor's measurement or used the Roof Area Calculator), or 'Enter Footprint + Pitch' to calculate from building dimensions. The footprint mode automatically applies the pitch multiplier to convert ground measurements to slope area.
Select your shingle type. 3-Tab Asphalt (the standard affordable option, 3 bundles per square) and Architectural/Laminate (dimensional, also 3 bundles but heavier and longer lasting) are the most common. Architectural Heavy/Premium uses 4 bundles per square due to the heavier weight per bundle. Wood Shake also uses 4 bundles per square.
Select your waste allowance: 10% for a simple gable roof with no valleys or hips, 15% for standard residential roofs, 20% for hip roofs or roofs with dormers and complex valleys. More cuts always mean more waste — when in doubt, use 15%.
Optionally enter your ridge length (in linear feet) and total eave perimeter for starter strip. One bundle of ridge cap shingles covers approximately 35 linear feet. One bundle of starter strip covers approximately 105 linear feet. If you skip these, the main bundle count still accounts for the main field area.
Enter your price per bundle for a material cost estimate. Read your results: total bundles needed, roofing squares, underlay rolls, nail quantity in pounds, ridge cap and starter strip bundles if entered, and total material cost.
How many bundles of architectural shingles for a 40 ft x 30 ft house, 6/12 gable roof? Step 1: Calculate roof area Footprint = 40 x 30 = 1,200 sq ft Pitch multiplier (6/12) = sqrt(36 + 144) / 12 = 1.118 Roof slope area = 1,200 x 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft Step 2: Add 15% waste 1,342 x 1.15 = 1,543 sq ft Step 3: Convert to squares 1,543 / 100 = 15.43 squares Step 4: Bundles (architectural = 3 bundles/square) 15.43 x 3 = 46.3 → order 47 bundles Step 5: Ridge cap (ridge = 40 ft for simple gable) 40 / 35 = 1.14 → order 2 bundles ridge cap Step 6: Starter strip (eave perimeter: 2 x 40 + 2 x (30/2) = 110 ft) 110 / 105 = 1.05 → order 2 bundles starter strip Step 7: Underlay rolls ceil(15.43 / 4) = 4 rolls Step 8: Nails 15.43 x 2.3 = 35.5 lbs → order 36 lbs (1.75" coil nails) Step 9: Material cost at $40/bundle 47 bundles x $40 = $1,880 shingles only Add: 2 ridge cap + 2 starter + 4 underlay + nails ≈ $200–$300 more
