The Brick Calculator tells you exactly how many bricks and mortar bags you need for any wall. Choose from five brick standards — US Standard, US Modular, UK Standard, Australia Standard, or Metric Modular — enter your wall height, length, and thickness in wythes, subtract openings for doors and windows, and the calcula..

Select your unit system (Imperial feet or Metric metres) and your brick type. Choose from US Standard, US Modular, UK Standard, Australia Standard, or Metric Modular. The brick size and mortar joint thickness are pre-filled — the bricks per square metre updates automatically. Switching units also switches the default brick type to the most common for that region.
Choose your wall thickness in wythes. A single wythe (one brick width, ~4 inches) is standard for garden walls, retaining walls, and veneer. Double wythe (~8 inches) is used for structural load-bearing walls and older construction. Triple wythe (~12 inches) is for heavy structural or fire-wall applications.
Enter your wall height and length. For walls with multiple sections or different heights, calculate each section separately and add the brick counts together. Then enter the total area of openings — doors and windows — in the final field. A standard US door is about 20 sq ft; a standard window about 12 sq ft. The calculator subtracts openings from the gross wall area automatically.
Select your waste allowance. Use 5% for a perfectly rectangular wall with no cuts. Use 10% for standard residential work — this is the industry default. Use 15% or more for decorative patterns (herringbone, diagonal), arches, or curved walls where significant cutting is required.
Optionally enter your brick price per 1,000 to get a material cost estimate. US face brick typically costs $400–$900 per 1,000 for common grades, rising to $1,000–$2,500+ for premium or handmade brick. Read the results: total bricks needed, mortar bags required, and material cost.
How many bricks for an 8 ft x 40 ft garden wall, single wythe, US Standard brick, 10% waste? Step 1: Wall area 8 ft x 40 ft = 320 sq ft Step 2: Bricks per sq ft (US Standard, 3/8" joint) Face area per brick = (8 + 0.375)" x (2.25 + 0.375)" = 8.375 x 2.625 = 21.98 sq in Bricks per sq ft = 144 / 21.98 = 6.55 bricks/sq ft Step 3: Net bricks 320 sq ft x 6.55 = 2,096 bricks Step 4: Add 10% waste 2,096 x 1.10 = 2,306 bricks — order 2,310 (round to nearest 10) Step 5: Mortar bags (80lb pre-mix, 1 bag per ~40 bricks) 2,306 / 40 = 58 bags Step 6: Material cost at $700/1,000 bricks 2,306 / 1,000 x $700 = $1,614 Step 7: Installed cost estimate 320 sq ft x $12–$20/sq ft = $3,840–$6,400 (labour + material)
